The Never Ending Sunset, Lemaire Channel.     Click to view in Photo Gallery

We didn’t see too much of the sun during our 10 days of the Antarctica cruise, but if we could have had only one afternoon of sun then the time for it was during the traverse of the Lemaire Channel. Such was our luck! One of the ship’s crew who had sailed the Lemaire Channel many times remarked that this was the only time he’d seen it this beautiful, when it wasn’t socked in with low, gray overcast skies. Given that our latitude was barely north of the Antarctic Circle and perpetual daylight at this season, the sunset lasted for over 4 hours. In fact it barely set at all just getting below the horizon before it would rise again in a couple hours. It never did get dark this night, and I eventually got too tired to stay up all night waiting for the show to end. The following morning the overcast skies had returned.
